The House voted on two charges - that the president abused his power and that he had obstructed Congress. Nearly all Democrats voted for the charges and every Republican against. President Trump's Republicans control the Senate so it is highly unlikely he will be removed from power. As voting took place in the House, Mr Trump was addressing a campaign rally in Battle Creek, Michigan. He told a cheering crowd: "While we're creating jobs and fighting for Michigan, the radical left in Congress is consumed with envy and hatred and rage, you see what's going on." The White House released a statement saying that the president was "confident that he will be fully exonerated" in a Senate trial. What happened in the votes? After 10 hours of partisan debate on ...

The former Cameroon captain has added his voice to Africans missing out on the world football award Cameroon legend Samuel Eto’o insists Sadio Mane deserved to win the Ballon d’Or had he not been “let down” by other Africans who voted against him for the award. Liverpool forward Mane finished fourth for the gong won by Barcelona’s Lionel Messi. Following outcries within the African football community after Mane missed out on the award, Eto’o believes the Senegal international should have been the Ballon d’Or winner. “If Sadio Mane won it and was on the podium, no one was going to complain because he deserves it and has been doing well and he had the best season,” Eto’o said as per IOL. Messi (Lionel) won because all the South Americans voted for him. I think the Europeans also voted for Virgil Van Dijk hence he was the runner-up.” Eto’o blamed African voters for snubbing Mane as former Liberia captain George Weah remains the only African to have won the award. “Africa...

Russia banned from all major sporting events for 4 years

Image
Russia has been handed a four-year ban from all major sporting events by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). It means the Russia flag and anthem will not be allowed at events such as the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and football’s 2022 World Cup in Qatar. But athletes who can prove they are untainted by the doping scandal will be able to compete under a neutral flag. Wada’s executive committee made the unanimous decision in a meeting in Lausanne, Switzerland. It comes after Russia’s Anti Doping Agency (Rusada) was declared non-compliant for manipulating laboratory data handed over to investigators in January 2019. It had to hand over data to WADA as a condition of its controversial reinstatement in 2018 after a three-year suspension for its vast state-sponsored doping scandal. WADA says Rusada has 21 days to appeal against the ban. If it does so, the appeal will be referred to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas). WADA vice-president Linda Helleland said the ban was “not ...

Chelsea clear to make January signings after transfer ban ruling by CAS

Image
Chelsea’s transfer ban has been halved by the court of arbitration for sport, clearing them to make signings in January. A penalty imposed by Fifa was due to cover two transfer windows: last summer and the one next month. Chelsea’s fine of 600,000 Swiss francs fine (£460,000) has also been halved by CAS. The club went to Cas after Fifa’s appeals committee rejected their case. Fifa imposed its ban on Chelsea after the club were found guilty of breaking transfer regulations relating to minors. Chelsea reluctantly accepted that they had been in breach of serious breaches of the governing body’s regulations but they have always maintained their innocence in relation to what were found to be less serious transgressions. At a recent meeting of lawyers for all parties Chelsea’s representatives advanced a very strong case as to why these alleged breaches ought to be disregarded. Fifa’s lawyers left that meeting thinking that the Cas verdict could well go against them. Real Madrid...

Image
Everton have sacked manager Marco Silva after becoming embroiled in a Premier League relegation battle, with former manager David Moyes expected to take charge on an interim basis. Silva was appointed ahead of the 2018/2019 season following his sacking from Watford, but a poor run of form this season has seen Everton slip to 18th in the Premier League table. The final nail in Silva's Everton coffin was seemingly the crushing 5-2 Merseyside derby defeat to Liverpool on Wednesday night. Duncan Ferguson will take charge of Saturday's game against Chelsea. Moyes has turned down the opportunity to take over at other clubs as he has held out for a return to the Premier League. He has also been under consideration by another of his former clubs, West Ham United, should they sack Manuel Pellegrini who has also been under pressure this season. However, Moyes' ready availability and experience, given he spent 11 years at Everton, and his desire to return to Goodison P...
