Image
Nigerian soldiers have been accused of arresting men with dreadlocks and those with tinted hair in Aba, a city in the south-eastern state of Abia. "The masked soldiers flogged many of their victims and used scissors to cut off the hair and then threw the victims into their vehicles and zoomed off," eyewitnesses told Punch newspaper. The men were reportedly then taken to an "unknown destination" over the weekend. An army spokesman, Major Aliu Kadiri, confirmed to the News Agency of Nigeria that the army was aware of the incident, and were "working on it”. It is not clear if the "hair-cutting" arrests are linked to anti-kidnapping operations being conducted by security agencies across the country. Nigeria's army is also involved in an operation targeting cattle thieves and the Islamist insurgency in the north-east. This is not the first time Nigeria's security agencies have focused on those with dreadlocks. In March, a police un...

Ethiopia bids to break tree-planting record to tackle climate change

Image
Officials in Ethiopia hope to plant 200 million trees in a single day in what they hope will be a world record. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed is leading the project which aims to counter the effects of deforestation and climate change in the drought-prone country. Some public offices have been shut down to allow civil servants to take part. The UN says Ethiopia's forest coverage declined from 35% of total land in the early 20th Century to a little above 4% in the 2000s. Mr Abiy launched the tree-planting exercise as part of his Green Legacy Initiative, which is taking part in 1,000 sites across the country. The aim is to plant a total of four billion trees. The BBC's Kalkidan Yibeltal in Addis Ababa says that for days, promotional videos have run on state media urging the public to plant and care for trees. The current World Record for planting trees in a single day is held by India, which used 800,000 volunteers to plant more than 50 million trees in 2016. Et...

New US rules gives power to deport migrants without going to court

Image
The US government is introducing a new fast-track deportation process that will bypass immigration courts. Under the new rules, migrants who cannot prove they have been in the US continuously for more than two years can be immediately deported. Until now, expedited deportations could only be applied to those detained near the border who had been in the US for less than two weeks. Rights groups say hundreds of thousands of people could be affected. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) says it will challenge the policy in court. The new rule is expected to be implemented with immediate effect after it is published on Tuesday. US immigration policy has come under increasing scrutiny in recent months – in particular, the conditions at the country’s detention centres on the southern border with Mexico. Kevin McAleenan, acting secretary of Homeland Security, said the change would “help to alleviate some of the burden and capacity issues” at the border. He added that i...

Midfielder N'Golo Kante was absent from the Chelsea squad for the game and Lampard revealed afterwards that the 28-year-old France international had already returned home because of a knee injury. "He is OK," Lampard said. "It was a decision that I made because I felt that him being here, with the facilities and ...
