Tiwa Savage pulls out of SA concert over xenophobia
Nigerian singer-songwriter Tiwa Savage says she is pulling out of a concert in South Africa later this month because of the anti-foreigner violence in the country.
The Afrobeats star was booked to perform on the main stage of the DSTV Delicious Festival on Saturday 21 September in Johannesburg, the city which has witnessed much of the violence and looting of shops – many owned by foreigners.
At least five people have been killed in the violence.
“I refuse to watch the barbaric butchering of my people in SA. This is sick,” she tweeted.
“Killing anyone that is African are my people whether they are Nigerians or not.”
Earlier, fellow Nigerian star Burna Boy said he would not go to South Africa again because of the violence and the xenophobia he had experienced in the past at the hands of South Africans.
On Monday, South African Police Minister Bheki Cele said "criminality rather than xenophobia" was to blame for the "senseless violence".
