MTN fined over WhatsApp bundles price hike

South African telecom giant MTN has been fined 5m rand ($340,000; £275,000) for not giving seven days notice before hiking the price of its WhatsApp bundles in 2018.

The body that regulates the industry, Independent Communication Authority of South Africa (Icasa), said that at least $135,000 of the fine would be suspended for three years, news site EWN reports.

MTN spokesperson Jacqui O’Sullivan defended the company, saying it had notified Icasa before implementing the price hike but it did not get a response.

The company said it would take the matter to the High Court, EWN reports.

Wakaso joins Chinese club Jiangsu Suning

Ghanaian midfielder Mubarak Wakaso is on the verge of swapping the Spanish La Liga for the Chinese Super League (CSL) after agreeing personal terms with Jiangsu Suning. Wakaso, 29, was entering into the final year of his three-year deal with Deportivo Alaves, but he will now depart midway through the season after the two clubs reached an agreement. The deal is subject to the 29-year-old passing a medical. Deportivo Alavés in a statement expressed gratitude to Wakaso "for his professionalism and dedication during this time and wished him the best of luck". He will join compatriots Emmanuel Boateng and Frank Achiampong in the Chinese topflight.

THE ban on celebrities endorsing alcoholic beverages by Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has clearly affected a lot of celebrities and one aggrieved personality is comic actor Kwame Dzokoto who says it is the reason why he is no longer in the media. Ghana and the United Kingdom have resolved to deepen the bilateral relations that exist between the two countries, as well as, explore areas of interest that will inure to the mutual benefit of the two countries and their respective populations.
